Marigold (Calendula officinalis) is a known healer, having been used medicinally since the 12th Century to treat minor burns, wounds, and skin conditions. Marigold has since proven to have anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic, anti-cancer, anti-diabetes, hepatoprotective (liver protecting), antioxidant, and wound healing properties. With an abundance of flavonoids, triterpenoids, glycosides, saponins, carotenoids, volatile oil, amino acids, steroids, sterols, and quinines, Calendula is one powerful little flower.

Calendula flowers can be brewed as a tisane, or blended with tea leaves and other botanicals, as shown here in our Blooming Harvest Tea. Whole flowerheads can also be infused in oil for use in making salves and creams. The flowers can also be added to soups and broths.

Calendula officinalis, alternatively known as Marigold calendula or pot marigold, is not to be confused with its smaller cousin, the garden marigold (Tagetes sp.), shown here.

Use with caution if you have an allergy to plants in the aster family, such as ragweed. As with any botanical, consult with a medical professional before incorporating Calendula into your diet.
