Scutellaria lateriflora
Skullcap- so named because the flower looked like the cap once worn in Medieval times to protect the head.
This amazing herb is a member of the mint family and is a “nervite,” meaning it helps and heals the nervous system. Headaches, stress, insomnia, and nervous exhaustion all benefit from the use of Skullcap.

Skullcap is an excellent antioxidant that serves as a neuroprotective for diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. It calms the nervous system and relaxes involuntary muscle movements. Seizures, tension, muscle aches, and muscle spasms all benefit from the use of Skullcap. As a result, the withdrawal symptoms from drugs, smoking, and alcohol can be alleviated with the use of Skullcap.

Tension headaches are reportedly improved with Skullcap since it reduces tension and anxiety and allows the body to relax. An added benefit is that sleep quality is improved. Be aware, though, that Skullcap causes drowsiness. Therefore, it should be taken at the end of the day.
Skullcap does interact with some medications and should not be taken without a doctor’s advice.
