Lepidium meyenii

Maca root is an adaptogenic herb native to the Andes that has a long history of use as a traditional food and botanical ingredient. Maca contains naturally occurring compounds that have been studied for their antioxidant and other biological activities. Scientific research has examined Maca in connection with energy, physical performance, mood, and aspects of reproductive and sexual wellness. Research is ongoing, and findings may vary depending on the preparation, dose, and individual factors.

Maca is a Peruvian food staple made into cookies, flan, smoothies, syrups, and liquor. Try adding a small amount of Maca powder to your yogurt, smoothies, ice cream, coffee, or baked goods. It has a nutty, butterscotch-like flavor that pairs well with other sweet flavors, such as the açaí berry powder pictured here. It’s typical to start small, such as 1/8th of a teaspoon.
Talk with a doctor before trying Maca or any other supplements, especially if you have any medical conditions or are taking any medications.
